MDM has developed the QSYS product by starting from ground zero, examining each component of a pump that limits efficiency, introducing innovations to improve the efficiency of each of those components and then putting them all back together into a totally new product. This unique product is really the building block of a radical new system for efficient pumping.
MDM’s philosophy on product development is simple and consists of three main points; innovation, efficiency, and quality. We don’t just want to have a “me too” product portfolio.
MDM strives for integrating disruptive technologies for the fluid handling industry. Almost 15 years ago, MDM’s president, Gene Ashe, identified a potential way to improve the design of traditional axial flow pumps. Their large and cumbersome designs were overloaded with fasteners, shafts, bearings and other moving parts. It was the challenge to reduce the footprint and assembly complexities in these axial flow pumps that became the catalyst for the Qsys axial flow pump design.
After a few attempts at a prototype and many years of R&D, MDM was finally able to find a match for this new design in an application that was perfectly suited to it – low-head Recirculating Aquaculture Systems. With an existing customer base in aquaculture and academia, MDM found great opportunity to participate in a grant program called SBIR through the USDA. The QSYS concept was awarded both phase I and II grants and has produced the prototype you see today.
QSYS has taken the fundamental efficient properties of high specific speed impellers and powered it by an innovative motor design. QSYS also allows for the flexibility of variable speed operation. The modularity of the design allows for multiplexing in both series and parallel configurations. Its concealed “In-the-Pipe” design makes for clean installations, protects the critical moving parts from the external environment, virtually eliminates noise, and reduces suction problems.
With the ever-increasing issue of energy costs (pump systems being some of the worst offenders in power consumption), developing a product like QSYS that reduces the footprint but, more importantly, reduces power consumption, continues to be our guiding principle.
The “fifth fuel”, as energy efficiency is sometimes called, is the most cost effective of all. Cost effective and cleanest energy choice of all is not to waste it.
A report by ACEEE, an American energy-efficiency group, reckons that the average cost of saving a kilowatt hour is 2.8 cents; the typical retail cost of one in America is 10 cents.
