Quiet Power, Real Impact: MDM Pumps Supports KBSTRRC’s Mission to Heal Sea Turtles

At MDM Pumps, we’re honored to support organizations that work tirelessly to protect our planet’s most vulnerable marine life. One such partner is the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (KBSTRRC) in Surf City, North Carolina—an organization dedicated to giving sick and injured sea turtles a second chance at life.

Healing the Ocean, One Turtle at a Time

Founded in memory of Karen Beasley and operated by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, the KBSTRRC plays a vital role in the conservation and recovery of sea turtles along the East Coast. Their mission is powerful and multifaceted:

“To conserve and protect all species of marine turtles both in the water and on the beach;
To rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick and injured sea turtles;
To inform and educate the public regarding the plight of all sea turtles and the threat of their extinction;
To provide an experiential learning site for students of biology, wildlife conservation, and/or veterinary medicine from around the world.”

Through their hands-on approach, KBSTRRC not only saves turtles in crisis but also cultivates the next generation of marine conservationists who protect our oceans.

Engineering for Animal Welfare: Colossus Pumps at Work

As part of KBSTRRC’s latest facility upgrade, MDM’s Sequence® Colossus™ pumps were chosen to power their new life support systems. The pumps were installed in a holding system—a triage area where mechanical noise and vibration are minimal, water quality is optimal, and thermal regulation is critical for recovering sea turtles.

Here’s what Life Support Systems Coordinator, Tina Sharpe, had to say about the experience:

“MDM Pumps are a workhorse as far as DC pumps go.  We were skeptical on how quiet they would be based on pumps we had previously used. Our life support systems are generally very loud, and create a fair amount of heat. Once the Colossus 750 MDM pump was installed, we questioned whether it was running because it was so quiet! It makes a perfect fit for areas exposed to public education sites where noise would detract from the experience. They take up less foot space, and made it easy to retrofit too. Overall it’s been a fantastic alternative to an old school pump. MDM colossus 750 pumps are the best pump we’ve *never* heard!

The Colossus’s low vibration, minimal heat transfer, and whisper-quiet operation made it ideal for KBSTRRC’s Sick Bay. When you’re caring for animals recovering from trauma in a lights-out, low-stimulation environment, the right pump can make all the difference.

KBSTRRC's Turtle Rehab Facility

Purpose-Driven Innovation

This partnership reflects MDM’s belief that highly efficient pumps can be a force for good—not just in performance and engineering, but in animal care, sustainability, and education.

We’re proud that our technology helps KBSTRRC:

  • Maintain stable, healthy water systems
  • Minimize operational costs
  • Reduce stress for their turtle patients
  • Create better working environments for veterinarians and marine biologists

As one director put it after seeing the new system in action:

“Are the pumps even running?”
Yes, they are—and that’s the point.
